Auckland Transport chairman says zero road deaths achievable, hints at slashed speed limits

On 15 May this year my mother and her friend were killed in a crash (See Stuff story Amazing women killed) by a driver on the wrong side of the road. Lack of attention to detail and concentration caused this tragedy. No matter how much you legislate and improve, the roads you can't stop bad driving

Zero road deaths. Its simply beyond delusional.

There will never be a zero road toll in NZ. Unless Ms Genter bans all road transport.Likewise speed limits, who can get near the limit on most of Aucklands roads now?

No doubt several billion spending put aside for consultants in there.I have no faith in anyone who wants 18th century technology to be at the forefront of the solution - the business case does not stack up so it will be a financial noose around our necks until someone scraps it...........I have no faith in the councils ability to spend the money wisely.......

Mmmm, I thought I was out of touch and senile but its good to know others are worse. Zero road deaths achievable - just like Labours promise of 10,000 affordable new houses a year - ha hah hah ha ha ad infinitum.

Don't waste a cent on a ˜smart' motorway. Look at what they wasted here between Wellington and Petone. An absolute waste of money that made thing worse, would love to see the expected benefits on that piece and when they were to be realised... no one is ever hold to account for failed projects

I drive it twice a day. No one ever does the suggested speed limit.. they would of been better off finding a solution to the merging traffic coming onto SH2 at the bottom of the gorge there.

Well time does fly as you get older.. but is it really April 1st already?

Definitely heading that way. I listened to a presentation from Phil Twyford on Monday night. When someone asked about public transport not picking you up or taking you to your destination his solution was walking and cycling. The funniest thing was him now wanting to fund the expensive Auckland Trainset with a PPP when they said they would scrap the PPP when they were in opposition.I guess when youve thrown the money away bribing unions students youve got to get the money elsewhere.

Speed does not kill, people do - neither does guns, people kill. Invest in making people better drivers, especially those where they never go over 20km/h and then come and drive in NZ.

all they did is create a tail back to Wgtn airport.

One day no-one will get killed on our roads, he said.Dreaming..absolutely dreaming.

Mike Hosking just did a survey with all the bias in the world. Not the brightest argument considering the exceptional unscientific uselessness of the survey methods. Mike Hosking and a circle of friends, tell you what lets use a survey of all those using vehicle transport now for commuting versus the less than 2% who cycle. Want to guess the results, provided not only by the council but by the NZ census.

Will AIL fix its congestion issues too??No point in spending all this money if once u get to the airport, a basic choke point at roundabouts and one lane access to dropoff.

Remember this guy Was the Chair of all of Aucklands DHBs, enough said.

Its not the speed. Its peoples bad driving habits fix the habits fix the problem

Pretty easy to know a few companies that do better infrastructure design, traffic management & planning, many even give the councils of NZ reports which they immediately dismiss and ignore to the detriment of the public.

Let me see, lets take a giant step back in time and require every driver to have someone walk in front of them with a red flag. This is definite delusional nonsense from from corporate spin doctors. Get real, deal with the drugged, the drunk, the cell phone addicts, and we may make some headway. Interestingly they concentrate on speed (a good little earner) which cause 15% of fatalities, what about the other 85% of problems out there.

Would of prefered money gone towards building a replacement Auckland harbour bridge or tunnel as we been throwing money at it on maintenance, and people want a walk/cycle/train lane on it so its overdue for an decent replacement, than towards more cycling lanes around South Auckland. Also revisiting poorly designed layouts that cause bottle necks by doing things such as halving how wide some of the footpaths in some areas, to add in addition lanes or median.
