The root of the cause was the GFC when interest rates went to zero and the US starting printing money to stimulate growth. It has done that however all asset prices (property/shares/antiques) have gone through the roof as interest rates have been so low it's been cheap to borrow money.
When you go to a bank for a loan they ask to see previous bank statements to ensure you can afford to pay the loan. Nobody is up in arms about that and I dont see how this is any different? Landlords have a right to ensure they are comfortable with a tenants ability to afford the rent. The media pick up on the comment around KFC and miss the point that due diligence is necessarily with any financial arrangement.
