37 years in a state house! That suggests the occupants werent doing much to improve their lot in life. | 512 | 538 | 26 | AndyW |
I guess shell want to gift her State house to one of her children next, because of their emotional attachment after three generations of Social Welfare dependency and entitlement. | 468 | 478 | 10 | By Stander |
Unbelievable! Im sorry about the passing of your father but your housing situation is not other peoples problem to fix, youve been given a house subsidised by the tax payers of this country so like it or lump it! Heres an idea, why not go out there and try and better yourself so you can move to an area you like, myself Im a bit over the welfare state we seem to be living in and the sence of self entitlement. | 461 | 475 | 14 | Ories |
Something I think the general public would be very interested to know is how many people have lived in a state house for 1oyrs or more! Surely after that period some serious review is undertaken around the issue of need!? It is hard to see how this gentleman needed a 3 bedroom home for 37yrs! And before all do-gooders condemn my comment think about it.....37yrs!! | 442 | 452 | 10 | Morse54 |
When exactly did state house tenants become so entitled? Recent cases have been a person refusing to move out and holding up an entire redevelopment, a woman who felt she should be able to stay in the house rented by her dead mother simply because it had always been rented by her mother. And now this woman. Dont they realise how extremely privileged they have been, or are, to have had any sort of tax payer funded accommodation? Dont they understand there are rules which ensure some fairness to all? Really to be fair to all, state house entitlement should be reviewed every five years and then perhaps this sense of a subsidised house for life might not be quite so prevalent. | 432 | 441 | 9 | JIB |
The issue I have is that these people expect to live in these houses their whole lives (disabled etc excused) so no wonder there is a housing shortage for families who suddenly need it due to family violence, sudden illness etc. are we just waiting for these people to die for one to become available? And going to have to keep building more and more? I dont see an issue with her swapping but I do see an issue that she thinks this is the norm and obviously doesnt work nor has tried to break the cycle. | 392 | 403 | 11 | T-pain |
37 years in a State house. No wonder the country is broken for those who need Government help. | 387 | 393 | 6 | AucklandGuy |
Cant inherit something that was never owned by the family! | 386 | 389 | 3 | scientistmum |
37 years in a state house? How can this be ok? The article said dad had a long carrear as a chef? | 370 | 374 | 4 | Shh im talking |
The entitlement some people think they have is crazy. It was not his house nor is it hers. Hopefully she learns from this that if you want something you need to actually earn it. | 367 | 372 | 5 | mydogbarks |
Our welfare system has given some people the idea that that the system will look after them for life. When it was designed to help the people for a short period of time. Instead of our current system of giving money, and more money. It should be an intrusive welfare system where if you receive a benefit you a assigned a social worker who tells you where you live. If you dont like it you move out of the system and take charge of your own life. Which is why I never went down that path. | 355 | 369 | 14 | 3dogs4me |
what is wrong with these people. A state house is for people in need not for people that cant let go | 319 | 326 | 7 | Curls21 |
You are lucky to have state rental and 3 bedrooms to boot. Your father had a similar size state rental but it seems only he resided there. That in itself is unreasonable. | 302 | 308 | 6 | Grumpy |
Grave. You have a house provided for by the State. Burger has died and that State house goes back to the state to be assigned to another family. Thats the way it works when you dont control the house. Owners control houses. | 295 | 297 | 2 | Tc2 |
Free or cheap housing is not a right It is a privilege It does not give you the right to choose where you live Maybe if you got a full time job you could afford to live in your own house whether owning or paying a proper rent like everyone else State housing should not be passed down from family to family There should be a time limit for the privilege of living in a tax funded house regardless of you situation This will give the tenants an incentive to start providing for themselves at some stage in their lives I have been doing that for 56 years with no hand outs

Its unbelievable how people live in a government subsidised home for 37 years and still feel injustice. It is a joke. Housing NZ should be used as a step during a difficult period not to live forever... | 286 | 288 | 2 | Liopinion |
I see no problem - let her buy the property at market rate. *sarcasm*
State houses are for people who are in dire straits, so much so that they cant afford market rent. I will always support this. Its not for those who cant afford to buy a home thats most people these days. People who DO pay market rent would never feel entitled to the house they are renting let alone the one their parents have rented. This story is so unfair to those families that are renting and constantly fear having to find a new dwelling, within their price range, hopefully within the school zone so they dont have to change schools too while paying TAXES so other people can get attached to state house that theyve lived in for decades. | 284 | 291 | 7 | Eljayem |
When someone is in a state house for 37 years then clearly the system needs changing. If Grace wants to live in and bond with a property then I would suggest she buys one. This house belongs to the taxpayer. | 283 | 288 | 5 | SoldieringOn |
