It takes a lot more skill to drive a manual car and i think that people seem to not be bothered to learn the skill. People just want the easy way. What people do not know is that a manual car is much safer when driven with skill because you are actually in better control of the Engine and therefore car. + maintenance and petrol consumption is cheaper. | 45 | 52 | 7 | ME1 |
In Auckland traffic you would be mad to prefer a manual over an automatic. Holding the clutch in while everyone else crawls by releasing the brake in automatics drove me crazy so I bought an automatic. Driving in the country is great in a manual but since 99% of my driving is on clogged city roads an automatic it is. | 39 | 42 | 3 | nibblo |
I love manuals but couldnt live with on in Auckland... except on my motorbike. However, imagine how empty the roads would be if all of Auckland drivers were failed their tests if they couldnt drive a manual.... | 37 | 37 | 0 | pstaines |
I still prefer a manual for our winding, hilly rural roads...but I suspect I wont get the choice much longer...

I wouldnt work nor drive for a company who lamely cites manual transmissions as a health and safety issue. That is beyond pathetic. Wet, weak and ridiculous. | 32 | 39 | 7 | k2w3 |
There is no real choice. I had to search really hard for a second hand manual for my son to learn it and it ended up an old European one. Europe is still predominantly manual so if you intend to travel it's best to know how to drive one surely? | 31 | 32 | 1 | Hippo5005 |
I know Im more engaged in the driving process, and hence more alert to what Im doing, when driving a manual. | 29 | 36 | 7 | KiwiPhred |
Is it a coincidence that as manuals disappear there is an overwhelming increase of idiots on the road? Manuals it would seem , make the better driver. More aware of the car, what its doing and surrounding factors. You have to be focused on driving. Most that have autos seem to be oblivious to everything, other vehicles, road rules, common courtesy. Nothing like switching off into a day dream only to be brought back to reality after a crash. If autos make driving easier, it follows that those who couldnt cope with a manual are allowed on the road. | 29 | 32 | 3 | Matey |
Manual gears are the norm in Europe | 25 | 25 | 0 | HumanPower |
I like the extra degree of control over what the car is doing that is provided by the clutch pedal. When driving automatics I find myself having to make do with a lesser amount of control over the vehicle. | 25 | 29 | 4 | anonymous |
Driving a manual in heavy city traffic is just a chore. Out on the open highway is much more fun. | 24 | 25 | 1 | Cranthorpe1 |
At least with a manual one can stay away from a CVT abomination for a while longer.

Just returned from a month in the UK. Manual is still king over there, which is surprising as you spend a lot of time in slow moving stop / start traffic where an auto seems to make far more sense and is an easier driving experience in that situation. | 23 | 23 | 0 | Casdone |
I love manuals, had them all my life and you feel more connected to the road rev-matching while downshifting before hitting corners on your weekend hill drives, but you have the days where you get sick of rowing gears stuck in traffic.
Every store you see of someone driving through a storefront window shares the same theme: Driving an Auto.
You drive a Manual. You steer an Auto. | 23 | 27 | 4 | Fendalton_ |
the new generation need autos so they can text and drive easier | 22 | 25 | 3 | Pen is Mighty |

Theyre still rocking manuals in Europe like its 1955. | 22 | 25 | 3 | HammerPants |
manuals are so much easier to adjust to your driving style. I have both, but I find automatic cars driving hopelessly boring. | 19 | 26 | 7 | Teodora |
Surprising that a couple of people cite health & safety as a reason for choosing auto, when in fact an automatic transmission leaves you with much less control over the car, so is therefore more dangerous. Often Ill see the car in front braking mid-corner or downhill, swinging erratically around bends, in a way that reveals both that the car is an automatic, and that the driver doesnt really know how to drive (which is probably why theyre in an automatic to begin with). Get the bloody things off our roads!
