Im assuming the roading company will be held to account....maybe not though. As a tax payer Im keen to foot the bill (said no one ever). | 57 | 59 | 2 | Only_My_Opinion |
Depends if the kept the receipt | 44 | 46 | 2 | Skeedadle |
Because my dear friend, in the UK and most of Europ the lay the base which is firmly rolled in (not done by letting cars roll over it) then they lay a asphalt base-coarse which is 20 cm thick and on top of that they put 10cm of asphalt of a very fine consistency. This makes for low road noise, shorter braking distances and better road holding. Thats the difference you see.

when you spend this amount of money and have this failure in such a short amount of time and no one is held to account then you realize why it happened in the first place. government agency incompetence. | 41 | 43 | 2 | roswellnewmexico |
Incredible that they can stuff this up!! | 41 | 42 | 1 | jaxoncolton |
Worse built expressway ever!! Uneven bumpy multiple surfaces that all involved should be ashamed of.. nzta and the tax payer should not be sharing remedial costs! Bring back ministry of works where profit is not the priority and cutting corners is not acceptable. | 40 | 49 | 9 | yea right |
Looks like kiwis are as good at building roads as they are houses. What a banana republic this has turned out to be. | 37 | 47 | 10 | mcglloyd1900 |
As soon as I sore the proposed construction method of the road before work even started I said it wouldn't work. Why? Because you are building on a swamp full of peat, either you have to dig all the peat out or build it as a bridge. This is exactly the same problem they have had with stretch of road between Queen Elizabeth Park and Poplar Ave for years. Don't understand why the contractors aren't covering all the costs, this is a bizarre situation. | 35 | 38 | 3 | #Borris |
How come they can build roads like this one in the UK and without all these issues while catering for larger traffic volumes and much higher truck weights? | 30 | 32 | 2 | MG Driver |
What an expensive mess | 30 | 30 | 0 | demain |
thats the rule now. No one is held to account to anymore. Profit comes before quality.... The road builders are gone with there money before all the problems like this come to light. We live in a country now of short term thinking for selfish reasons thats it plain and simple. | 29 | 31 | 2 | Jono5 |
Exactly the same situation with Waikato expressway Rangiriri section. New section of Waikato expressway opens to much self-congratulation, then within a month we get endless road cones blocking one (of the two) lanes entirely and 70kph for about 5 kms. No visible signs of remedial work being done for almost a year. Most people gave up reducing speed. Then I got a ticket for 92kph in in 70kph zone with no traffic around me. Cop was almost apologetic, but rules are rules. Cop said it was because of poor grip in the wet (it was a blue-sky day when I was ticketed). Then a month later the cones were removed and the speed opened up to 100kph. No remedial work was ever done, and since I had paid my ticket, I could not reclaim my fine.
If they spent less money laying out miles of ridiculous and unnecessary road cones and put that money into building the road properly the first time around, we would be much better off
What a farcical situation, but so common in NZ | 27 | 29 | 2 | TARFUN |
YOU ARE DREAMING - NZTA contracts are so full of HOLES its not funny !! | 27 | 29 | 2 | The Caveman |
what do you expect when you accept the lowest bid. gotta save cost somewhere. | 26 | 29 | 3 | two_life_terms |
Yes. Smartly, the last Govt agreed a fixed price contract as part of the deal so this kind of quality failure is at the construction partnership's cost as I understand it | 24 | 29 | 5 | JP_NZ |
Surely the managers and engineers deserve the blame here, not the guys doing the hard yards. | 23 | 27 | 4 | Corey Hughes |
When will NZTA start holding their designers and project managers (and highly paid consultants) to account. This is taxpayers money they are spending fixing problems that should never have been allowed to happen in the first place - not to mention the increased costs to motorists who travel this road daily and are delayed by the constant road works involved in repairing this mess. | 22 | 24 | 2 | Bassa |
